Herself in the Wild: Provence

Where to Stay: La Bastide de Marie
Beautifully situated in the heart of Provence, La Bastide de Marie is the definition of picturesque. Nestled into the property's vineyards, the whole vibe is warm and welcoming. The decor hits the perfect balance between rustic and chic. We arrived late in the morning of a cool, breezy day and were cheerfully greeted with fresh coffee and croissants. The hotel is family-run and the staff was super helpful in recommending their favorite nearby restaurants and villages.
Positioned near the village of Ménerbes, the location makes for a convenient base from which to explore the other sites of the Luberon. It was also the perfect haven to return to after a busy day of sightseeing. The property features many different corners in which to find a peaceful place to rest, whether it be on the couches by the fireplace in the entry room, on the lounge chairs in the garden or by one of the two outdoor pools.
Must Do: Day Trip to Oppéde Le Vieux
Walking through Oppéde Le Vieux feels like you've gone back in time to another age. This long abandoned Medieval village is slowly coming back to life thanks to a group of artists, writers and sculptors who are slowly renovating the crumbling buildings into studios and living spaces. Reserve an entire afternoon to slowly explore the hillside town and surrounding park. The walk to the chapel at the top of the hill is worth it for the view alone.
After getting lost in history and building up an appetite, stop by Maison de la Truffe in Ménerbes for a crisp glass of local wine and a plate of charcuterie. The cafe slash wine shop has a large selection of regional wines, but my favorite part is the patio which features another amazing view.
Must See: The Cliff-Hugging Buildings of Gordes
One of the most famous hilltop villages, Gordes, is full of tourists, but the charm of the town still manages to shine through the crowds. As you drive along the pretty route, it is hard not to be awed by the famous buildings that hug the cliffside. There is a popular part along the road to stop for a picture. (You won't miss it because it is always full of tourists.)
Once you're in the town, explore the cobblestone streets, ancient archways and don't skip on touring the mysterious underground caves. When you're ready for that glass of Rosé, head to Airelles Gordes and opt to sit on the patio for yet another (you guessed it) view!
Favorite Restaurant
We absolutely loved our entire experience at Le Saveurs Gourmandes in Ménerbes. The husband and wife team who run the small restaurant are as welcoming as they are talented. The bouillabaisse (local fish stew) was perfect for the surprisingly chilly August evenings, and the ingredients were super fresh. Make a reservation ahead of time as the spot is not a secret - it gets booked out most evenings.
